Bass Guitar
A bass guitar is very similar to a regular guitar and can be differentiated by its longer neck and four strings as opposed to six. There are six and seven string basses but they are rare and often custom made. Most commonly they are electric but there are acoustic bass guitars that have a large body.
A bass guitar can have frets like a regular guitar or it can be more like a traditional upright bass which is completely fretless and often played with a bow. There are a number of ways to play a bass guitar, the strings can be plucked, strummed, slapped and manipulated in a wide variety of ways but a bow is never used.
A bass guitar is typically tuned to four notes, E, A, D, and G although many musicians have their own preference. A de-tuner can also be used to change a string to a pre set lower note in the middle of a song, typically from the E-string down to a low D. Professional instruction can be found in many different styles although many players learn by ear, imitating their favorite songs and playing in a number of bands.
