Classical Guitars

Classical guitars are typically strummed or plucked although a plectrum, or pick, is rarely used. In the past the six strings were made from animal gut but now nylon is typically used although gut strings are still available and highly regarded by purists. They are constructed from high quality wood which is usually finished with a glossy clear coat.

Classical guitars can be played in wide variety of styles. There is no standard procedure for playing one which allows them to be used in all musical styles including jazz, flamenco, mariachi, polka, classical and many others. Modern versions evolved from the Spanish guitar which was designed by Antonio Torres Jurado who established the standards for what is now considered the classical or acoustic guitar.

Versions of classical guitars have been played since the renaissance and evolved from even older stringed instruments. There have been many paintings depicting the various forms the guitar has progressed through and they were very popular during Victorian romanticism. Their legacy continues today with many acoustic one-man bands that are consistently popular.
