Guitar Amplifiers

Guitar amplifiers are most commonly used for electric guitars although they are always used when playing in front of a large audience whether they are electric or acoustic. They increase the sound produced by the strings and pick-ups of the guitar and project it through a loudspeaker.

Guitar amplifiers can change the tone and frequency of the guitar with various equalizers and electronic and analog effects. An analog amplifier uses vacuum tubes for improved sound quality although most amps now use semi-conductors for increased reliability and low heat with a negligible loss of quality.

There are two types of guitar amplifiers, standalone units, or head amplifiers, that only increase the power of the signal and have no loudspeaker and combo units that have one, two, or four loudspeakers and a built in amplifier. They vary in price from $50 for a practice model to custom made amps that cost thousands of dollars.
